Oak Room- pre- K 5 day class
We read "The ear book" by Al Perkins We talked about our sense of hearing.
We colored paper plates to make music makers. We turned them into a music instrument by adding beans between two paper plates and putting streamers on them too.
We did a counting activity, using our sense of hearing. We dropped coins into a box where the children could only hear them hit not see them hit. We danced with the shakers we made.
We listened to "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you hear?" We identified sounds on tapes.
What words start with the letter C? We played sounds Bingo using headphones.
Maple Room- MWF class
We read "The mouse and the apple" by Stephen Butler
We did a cutting/tearing project for art. The children used scissors to cut strips of paper into little pieces. They glued them onto a paper plate to look like apples.
We had pot scrubbers at the easel to paint on paper.
We did the September song, Over the deep blue sea and 5 little apples for music time.
We did our first skype session today. We skyped with someone in Singapore today. We are marking on a map each place we skype to.

We read "The little rabbit who liked to say Moo" by Jonathan Allen
Our question today was What animal sound do you like to make?
We painted duck shapes using yellow paint mixed with shaving cream. We drew on black paper with chalk dipped in sugar water at the easel.
We did the wiggle song, (Dr. Jean- all day long CD)

Trinity Preschool Activities for Thursday, September 26, 2013
Oak Room- 5 day Pre- K class
We read the story "Little Blue and Little Yellow" by Leo Lionni
We are learning about the sense of sight.
The children cut out a circle shape- great fine motor practice and important for children to know how to do when in kindergarten. Then they painted with blue and yellow paint to illustrate the story.
We did a color bird rhyme-we also named things we could think of that are each color.
We played ring around the rosie- using different actions
We asked the children "Does your name have the letter C in it? We graph the results and discussed them.
We looked at various kinds of binoculars and color wands. We played a small group game of listening BINGO.
Maple Room- Thursday class
We read "Ten Red Apples" by Pat Hutchins
The children drew their own pictures of something about an apple. They dictated to us what it was about and then some of them wrote it also themselves on their paper. They did a wonderful job!
We also practiced writing our names. They have a card with their name on it and they look at it if they need help.

We used foam textured rollers dipped in paint today for art.
We had magnetic face pieces to create various kinds of faces at the easel.

We did a 5 little germs rhyme to remind the children about how germs can make us sick.
We put red color in the water in the water table today.

We read "Nosy Rosie" by Holly Keller and Aliki
We painted with kool-aid mixed with water and smelled the different colors.
We did "the bear hunt", "put your finger on", and "sing a song of senses" for music time.
We guessed objects in our letter C mystery bag.
Our dramatic center is set up as a vet clinic and we take care of animals.

We did a draw and tell story that revealed a dog.
We did "Dog in school" (Carole Peterson CD), Hokey Pokey, and Wheels on the bus (using felt board pieces for each part of the song)

Oak Room- 5 day pre-k class
We read "Popcorn" by Frank Asch today and we read "Arthur's nose" by Marc Brown
We are learning about the 5 senses and we are learning about our sense of smell today.
(Could you smell the popcorn when you walked in the building?)
We glued real colored popcorn onto a popcorn shaped bag.
We did 5 little popcorn kernels in a pan", and "Bear Hunt" for music today.
We popped popcorn in a large tub to play with during choice time today. We all sat in a big circle around it and watched it pop. We took the top off the air popper and it shot in the air. We got to use cups, and scoops to play with it.
Of course we had some popcorn at snack.

We made applesauce with the apples the children brought in to school.
We had apple stencils and roller brushes at the easel.
We sorted the apples by color, we did a taste test to see what we liked best. We measured our apples using number cubes. We talked about what we know about apples.
We did the "September song", "Way up high int he apple tree" and A-P-P-L-E (sung to the tune of Bingo).

We talked about germs today and how they spread. We demonstrated by using glitter. We put glitter on one person's hand and they touched someone else and now that person had glitter on their hands - this showed how our germs from our hands can spread so easily.

Today was the first day we could not go outside. We have a great gym to use on bad weather days, we had our trikes, a rocking alligator and basketballs and hula hoops today.
Oak Room: 5 day - pre- K class
We are learning about our bodies and all about me this month.
We read "The skeleton inside you" by Philip Balestrino . We have 206 bones inour bodies.
We glued Q-tips to look like bones on a body shape
We looked at pictures of x -rays to see what bones look like.
We asked the children "Do you have the letter B in your name?
We did a bones rhyme, "Toe, leg knee" and "those bones" for music today.

We read Llama, llama, Rd Pajama by Anna Dewdney
We also read an M&M counting book and we did the activities with M and;M's to learn math.
We did counting, sorting, adding, subtracting, and graphing with M and M's.
We did hands inside the circle for music and sticky bubble gum.

We painted our hands with paint brushes and made hand prints on paper. The children enjoyed the sensory feel of painting their hands.

We read "When I 'm feeling Happy" and "When I'm feeling sad" by Trace Moroney
We read the letter "B" book.
We worked in our journals on the letter B. The children practiced writing the letter B, upper and lower case, and drew or traced a picture of something that starts with the letter B.
We did "Your face will surely show it" and we had faces with a happy face and a sad face, the children each held up the right face for the answer to the question "How do you feel when......?
We did a science experiment today, we put one hard boiled egg in milk and one in cola. We are observing what will happen to each and also make predictions about what will happen.

We read "The apple pie tree" by Zoe Hall (a big book version)
We made mini apple pies and had them for snack.
We had tree shapes at the easel and used a cork to dip in paint to add apples to our trees.
We are also talking about the seasons and we read "All around the seasons" by Barney Saltzberg
We talked about what we do during each season.
We did the September song, If you are happy and you know it and Tommy Thumb for music time today.
We have purple sensory sand in the sensory table.

WE shook powdered paint on paper in a tray. Then we used a spray bottle with water to spritz it.
We have purple sensory sand in the sensory table.
We did "Wiggy, wiggy, wiggles" using bells and the "Opposites" song for music time today.

We made body shapes to look like themselves today. The children looked in a mirror to draw their hair, eye color and clothes. We will hang them in the hall- see if you know which one is your child.

We did "Hands are for clapping" and "Body rock" for music time today.

We told an old story called "The little red house". It is a story about an apple. Ask your children about it.
We did apple printing using red and yellow glitter paint. We had apple shape stampers at the easel with yellow and green paint.

We read "We're different, we're the same" by Jim Henson
We glued fabric pieces, yearn, buttons, etc. on a person shape paper. The children drew a on it too.
We had dab a dot painters at the easel.
We talked about how we are different and how we are all the same too.
We started our question of the day today. We asked "Are you a boy or a girl?" We use the results to graph, which has more, which has less, etc.

We read '"Rhino's Great Big Itch" by Natalie Chivers
We did painting with pot scrubbers and spools dipped in paint.
We did "Dog in School", "Jump Jim Joe" (with partners), "Sticky Bubble Gum" for music time.

Oak Room- Pre- K 5 day class
We looked at a giant sunflower that our teacher brought in today. We took pictures with it too.
We looked at a fresh pineapple and then ate it for snack.
We read "If you give a dog a donut" by Laura Numeroff today. We also did an activity where we asked the children a story starter to encourage them to think of an extension...
If you give a snake a ....
If you give a puppy a.....
If you give a turtle a....
If you give a bear a ......
some of the answers were :
an apple, he'll want a cupcake
cake, he will want milk
a cup cake, he will want pizza
a donut, he'll want milk
a bone, he'll want water
ice cream, he'll want to eat a muffin
This is a great activity in the car, or when you read a story to ask what they think will happen , or what will happen next. Encourage your child to think about the possibilities and outlandish is fun.
We did crayon resist names for art. We wrote the children's names in white crayon on white paper and then gave them water colors to paint over it with. The crayon resists the paint, so it shows up. Then the children could draw their own picture with white crayon before painting over it with watercolors. They loved it.
We did a group time activity of thinking of words that start with the letter A.
We did "Underneath the broomstick" and "Sally the swinging snake" using scarves for our music time.

We did a group art painting project using kitchen utensils- like potato mashers, egg beaters and whisks. We had painting at the easel with brushes.
We did a 5 little crayons fingerplay
We sang "hello everybody", "Late last night" and "Head, shoulders, knees and toes" for music time.

We cut up egg cartons into sections with 4 cups in each. We put a different color of paint in each section and each child got their own paint container. They could mix the paint, or keep it separate
We did a guessing game, "Which animal is missing?"

We read another one of the "If you..." books by Laura Numeroff "If you give a pig a pancake"
We glued a barn shape onto paper and used animal stampers to add animals to our farm picture.
We made pancakes for snack (to go along with our story)
We did a graph activity. "Does your name have the letter A in it? Then we discuss the results, are there more yes or no's, how many more, etc. We will do this with our letter of the week each week.
We did "Who stole the pancake from the frying pan?" (each child takes a turn coming up and taking a pretend pancake which has their name on it from the frying pan.
We did an Old MCDonald animal sing-a-long using animal props.
We divided the class into small groups and took them to another room to play ABC BINGO.

We read "Llama, llama time to share" by Anna Dewdney
We divided the class into two groups and played games; Color and Shape Bingo and Pop and Win Alphabet Bingo. We practiced writing our names.
We did the "alphabet phonics song", "the chicken dance", and "This is the way we do it" for music time today.

Oak Room- pre k 5 day class
"We read another one of the Laura Numeroff Books in the series we call "If you...." This one was "If you give a pig a party" We also read a letter "A" book.
We started our journal notebooks today. Each child has their own notebook and as we learn a new letter, we write the letter in the book, and either draw a picture of something that starts with that latter, or trace a stencil of something that starts with the letter.
We decorated party hats at the free art table ( like the story about the Pig and the Party)
We sang "Tap your toe and follow me" and "Deep in the Jungle" (we used drums along with the song)

We read "Quick as a cricket" by Audrey Wood
We did self portraits using crayons and markers. The children looked in the mirrors to see what they look like to draw the picture.
We ad tempra paint and textured brushes at the easel.
We played a color memory game.
We did the September song, "Head, Shoulders", Knees and Toes", "Brown Bear", and "Everybody has a face" for music time today.

We read "If you give a mouse a cookie" by Laura Numeroff and "A pocket full of kisses" by Audrey Penn
We cut out a circle shape, painted it brown and decorated it to look like a cookie. We are making art displays with the art we made based on these Laura Numeroff books. We have our cupcakes, muffins, and cookies.
We did our letter A activity today- we have a mystery bag with objects that start with the letter A in it. The children have to guess what might be in the bag that begins with the letter A.
We did a phonics song called "ABC letter sounds" and "Jump up, turn around" for music time today.

We read "If you take a mouse to the movies" by Laura Numeroff and "The Kiss Goodbye" by Audrey Penn
We are starting our letter of the week and we are beginning with the letter "A". Today we looked at how to write the letter and the sound the letter makes. Each day we will do a different activity for the letter.
We painted apples with puffy paint for art.
We did the song "Come and get a smiley face" and each child took a turn coming up to the board to get a smiley face. We also did "When I was a little fish".
We enjoyed time on the playground today.

We did finger painting with red and blue paint; we made hand prints for our "Kissing hand"

It was our first full day of class today, and we had a few hesitant children who cried a little; but they settled in quickly. We read "Clifford's First Day" by Norman Bridwell
We did tempra paint with Q-tips. We had dry erase and erasers at the easel.
We did "Brown Bear", "List of Dances" and "Tap your toe and follow me" for music today.
We talked about our classroom rules. We did a calendar activity and weather activity- which we will do each day.

Oak Room: 5 day Pre-k class
We read "If you give a moose a muffin" by Laura Numeroff and we read "The kissing hand" by Audrey Penn.
We cut long strips of paper into little snips and glued them onto a muffin shape to look like sprinkles.
We did the "Pirate song", The Muffin shop" and "The September song" for our music time today.
We enjoyed running around on the playground.
We are learning about our room and about the classroom rules too.
Maple Room: MWF class
We had our first full day of class with the kids today and it was a great day. We read "Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister
We painted fish shapes with watercolors at the art table and we had fish shapes with glitter paint at the easel.
We did "The September song", "Pet Store by my hose", 5 little fish tease Mr. Shark", "When I was a little fish", The Pirate song" and The Freeze dance" for music time today.
We reviewed our classroom rules and talked abaotu sharing. We did a number game called "Find the fish" numbers 1-5 (we hid a little fish behind numbers 1-5 and the children took turns guessing which number it was hiding behind. We introduced "Sally the centipede" (a counting by 1's and 5's activity).

We had our split day today with half the class coming each hour. We do this to help the children with their school adjustment.
We read "Spot goes to school" by Eric Hill
We painted with thin brushes and watercolors on white paper.
We had magnetic shapes at the easel.
The children were given time to explore the areas of the room including the dramatic corner, blocks, science, and table activities.
We did "Little Fish" and "Brown Bear,

We had our first day of class in our Pre- K room- our Oak Room
We are reading the books by Laura Numeroff and today we read "If you take a mouse to school".
We also read Llama Llama Time to share" by Anna Dewdney
We painted a key shape to decorate our classroom door. We put the key shape in a box and rolled prickle balls dipped in paint back and forth across the key to paint it.
We talked about our classroom rules and learned about our classroom materials. We did a group time activity with our name tags- we took turns going up to the magnet board and put our name next to the beginning letter of our name.
We did "Rhythms on parade" and used rhythm sticks while we paraded around the classroom. We also did a "We share rhyme".
We had a great first day and this will be a wonderful year in our class.
