Kate Askegaard stippling ink drawings 2012

Martin Luther King Jr, stippling ink drawing by Kate Askegaard 2012

President Abraham Lincoln, stippling ink drawing by Kate Askegaard, 2012

Harry Houdini, stippling ink drawing by Kate Askegaard 2012

Close up of Houdini to show detail

A glimpse of the process Kate uses to make drawings

The artist, Kate Askegaard (there is a link to her BLOG on this BLOG site as well) chose these people to include in her series "A moment in time" because they were all individuals who made a difference and died too soon.  Her desire is for people to look into themselves and ask what they can do with their moment in time too.

Kate takes an image and does a grid over it, then she lays rag paper over graph paper and whatever is in that space on the image, she recreates using small dots, and squiggles.  The images are remarkable and convey such emotion, as she says, in the eyes especially.  The images are amazing in themselves, but when you can see she has recreated them using small dots, it is incredible.

I hope to share these images with as many people as possible, they are so remarkable.  I hope you enjoy seeing them.

Kate's piece, "A moment in time" is on display in Grand Rapids, Michigan from Sept 19- Oct 7th, 2012 in the ARTPRIZE competition.  Other portraits in the series can be seen on her BLOG or in person in Grand Rapids.  They include, John Lennon, Bruce Lee, and Princess Diana, who all used their moments in a special way.

( We added one color on one side and a different color on the other side- we will see what new color is made).  Remember don't stir!  The colors will "diffuse" into the milk and make it change color.  We talk about scientific terms like "Observe" , "predict", and "outcome".  The technical thing that is happening is that the molecules in both the milk and the food coloring are moving and they are different concentrations so it mixes itself, but since that is a little over their heads, so we talk more about understanding this is science and learning some terms.

We took the children out of the room in small groups and played educational games with them.

We expect all of the children to adjust quickly and until then, we will continue to comfort them and help them feel safe and cared for at our school.  (Sometimes this process is harder on parents than kids)

We read "Clifford's 1st school day" by Norman Bridwell

We had colored glue at the free art table and fun things to glue onto the paper.

We had Q-tips with paint at the table for art.

We had dry erase markers at the easels.

We did "List of dances" (a movement song by Jim Gill, "Tommy Thumb" a quiet hand movement song by Carole Peterson, and "Brown bear" (by Greg and Steve- based on the book by Eric Carle- one of our favorites and very soothing for children for music time today.

Oak Room- Pre- k class

We are continuing our If you...series and today we did "If you give a moose a muffin" by Laura Numeroff

We used scissors today to snip small pieces of paper.  Then we glued the paper onto muffin shapes to look like sprinkles.

We did "muffin shop", "5 little apples in a tree," and "The freeze dance" for music today.

We had our weekly "Mystery bag" filled with items that begin with the letter A- the children guess what might be in it. We will do this each week with our letter of the week.

Science experiment:  We took two hard boiled eggs and put one in milk and one in coke.  We will see what happens.  This will help show children why pop is harmful to your teeth.

Learning Centers in Trinity Preschool Classrooms

We have our classrooms set up all similarly, but we adjust materials to suit the ages of the children who use that room.  These are the learning centers that are in each room:

1. Rug/Group time area: This is our gathering spot for stories, music, sharing time, etc. The rug is also a large open play space located near the block area for additional space for block play during choice time.

2. Block area:  This area includes unit blocks, cars and trucks, trains sets, play people, plus many other kinds of blocks that rotate through each classroom.

3. Art area: Our art center is broken up into three areas actually, the first is the art table where we set up daily art activities which are "process" based.  That means we give children creative materials and they use them to make art, rather than a craft piece or a product piece comprised of specific materials that must be used in a specific way.  The second art area is our easels, and in most of our rooms, we have two easels next to each other so children can work side by side.  Our easels could have paint, chalk, stencils and markers or sometimes they magnetic shapes to use on the magnet boards.  Our third art area is called "free art" and that is because it is a table set up with art materials the children can use to make whatever they choose.  They can use the colored glue, markers, scissors, crayons, stencils, pencils, etc. to make their own art.

4. Library/Book Rug: This area has comfortable couches and chairs for the children to sit and look at books alone or with a friend.  We also keep the floor puzzles in this area for children to use.

5. Dramatic Play: Our dramatic play area is a popular center as children explore the ever changing materials.  Our dramatic corners change occasional from the traditional house corner to a space center, post office, bakery, grocery store, pet store, or library.  This is great for children to help develop social skills and language skills.

6.Table toys: This area has materials that change regularly, we have a variety of puzzles, sorting activities, match games, fine motor skills activities, language materials, etc.

7. Science Area: We provide an assortment of science materials for children to explore.

8. Sensory Table: Children learn through their senses and the materials in our sensory table change regularly to provide an assortment of textures to explore.  We love water, (sand- outside), beans, rice, pom poms, anything we can find that is safe and fun to touch.

9. Misc: We bring in other items to the classroom too, such as a light table.

The materials in the rooms are changed frequently, we are fortunate to have a good variety of equipment so we can provide the children with a rich environment.

The most important component however in our rooms is she teachers!  The teachers are able to interact with the children in each of these area of the rooms to help children learn as they use the explore and have fun.

We also have a large motor room and a great playground the children use each day.

Trinity Preschool Maple Room (Afternoon class) Fri., Sept 7, 2012

Today was the first day for the children in our afternoon class and since they are all new to our school, we are spending time learning how we do things here.  We have a routine we will follow each day and the children will become accustomed to what comes next pretty fast.  We had a good day today.

We have a welcome bulletin board with a big apple bushel in it.  The children painted apple shapes with red puffy paint today to fill our basket!  If they want to paint some more, we painted on plain paper too.

We did the story "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly" using a big puppet today.

We also had watercolors at the easel for the children to use today.

Our playdough was a popular spot as was the house corner.

We had a variety of puzzles at the table today.

For music today we are learning the September song, we sang "5 little fish", we did "the freeze dance", "The dancing scarf blues" while dancing with scarves.

We played in the gym today since it was raining earlier and too wet on the playground.  We had balls, hula hoops, teeter totters and a basket ball net.

We had a great first day at school.

Trinity Preschool Maple Room (Morning class)Sept. 7, 2012

Today was our first day of class in the Maple Room and we had a great day.  The children are busy learning the routines and getting to know the other children in our room.

We read the book "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister and then for art, we painted fish shapes with watercolors and just like in the story, our teacher shared one of her pretty fish scales with each of the children.  We will put the fish on our Welcome bulletin board in the room.  Make sure you look at it.

We also had fish shape paper with glitter paint at the easel.

We did some fish rhymes, played a game called find the fish, a number 1-5 recognition game.  We are learning a September song about the month, we also sang "Went to the pet store by my house", "5 little fish teasing Mr. Shark", "When I was a little fish" and "the pirate ship song."

We played in the gym today since it was raining earlier and too wet on the playground.  We had balls, hula hoops, teeter totters and a basket ball net.

We had a great first morning at school.

Trinity Preschool- Oak Room- Sept. 6 & 7 2012

In our Oak class yesterday and today, we continued reading the "If you...." series of books by Laura Numeroff..Thursday we read "If you give a dog a doughnut" and Friday we read "If you take a mouse to the movies"

We usually read two stories each day in our Oak Pre-K classroom so we also read On Thursday, "The kiss goodbye" by Audrey Penn and on Friday we read "The kiss box" by Bonnie Verburg

On Thursday for art, before the children arrived we wrote their names with white crayon on white paper and the children then used watercolors to paint over the whole paper.  Their name appeared like magic.  the children then could draw their own picture and paint over it to make it appear.  We have the names hanging in  our room

On Friday, we decorated puzzle shape pieces for a display we will use to decorate our class door.

For music Thursday and Friday we did "The twelve days of school" using some visual props (The tune is the twelve days of Christmas); we did "Down around the corner at the doughnut shop"; where each children brings up a penny and buys a felt doughnut. We also did the Mack chicken dance for some movement time.

We played out on the playground on Thursday and on Friday it was too wet outside so we played in the school gym with balls, hula hoops, basketball net, and some rocking teeter-toters.

We also are learning a "left hand rhyme" and using our right hand to say "The pledge of allegiance"

We are using various table activities like puzzles, magnetic writing boards, shape sorters, magnetic dress p dolls, alphabet puzzles and button lacing games.

We had a great first few days of school. It is nice they all have been in the school before so they know the basic routine.

Trinity Preschool Activities for Wed. Sept 5, 2012

While the Willow and Maple Rooms continued to meet new families and welcome back returning families today, our Oak room, Pre- K class got right to business!

They start out by helping the children feel welcome to school ( in this case, welcome back as everyone in this room this year is a returning student!) and help them get aquainted with their classmates.  They also discussed the class rules today.

We read "If you give a mouse a cookie" by Laura Numeroff and "the Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn.

We have our class welcome bulletin board of "if you give a mouse a cookie" and the children helped decorate it by painting circles brown and adding pom poms to  make the cookies. Make sure you check it out. (I will post a picture tomorrow)

We did "Come and get a smiley face" "If you're happy and  you know it" and "The pirate song" for our music time today.

We had a little rain earlier in the morning so we thought we would have to play in the gym, but the sun came out, the playground dried off and we had fun outside.

Looking forward to a great second day on Thursday.
